- As we near the numerical new year which many utilize for setting resolutions for the coming year, this New Moon is in fact a more aligned moment, for intention setting and personal commitments for the year ahead.
The numerical new year is not based on any type of natural phenomenon, and therefore is not backed up by celestial or earthly energies to charge and support our intentions. However, when we work with the lunar calendar instead, we know that new beginnings and intentions for such, are best made at the beginning of a lunar cycle.
A New Moon in Capricorn, is especially potent for intention-setting which is related to responsibility, commitment, work and health as it is an Earth sign ruled by strict and disciplined Saturn. As you reflect upon these themes and the intentions you’d like to set for yourself and your life, whether it is for the lunation or for the new year ahead, allow yourself to plant these intentions in the soil of Capricorn.
What commitments would you like to make to yourself? Where is more discipline needed? How can you lean into systems of structure to support your life in thriving from divine order? This New Moon calls you to embrace these aspects, and till the soil of your life where it’s needed, so that these intention-seeds can root, sprout and flower in the coming year.

Scents for Capricorn
For this Super New Moon we are choosing invigorating scents like lemon or other citrus, eucalyptus, cedarwood, mint, or rosemary. Cypress is one of our personal favs for the Capricorn moon, since its bright, woodsy scent is both revitalizing and grounding. Just make sure to dilute if you’re going to use it on skin.

Colors and Fabrics for Capricorn
Surround yourself with rich, dark colors like dark greens, blues, and even black. Dark colors like these are associated with Capricorn but they also absorb energy. Many folx love wearing dark colors during spellwork or during a waxing moon for this exact reason. If you’re looking for the perfect new moon outfit, pick textiles that are refreshing and gentle like silk or satin. You’ll convey simple elegance, be ready to manifest, and most importantly- look good while doing it.
Gemstones for Capricorn
Aventurine, moonstone, citrine, and pyrite are all energizing and absolutely perfect for this Super New Moon. Our #1 choice for this new moon is amethyst, which is energizing but also has some logical Capricorn energy.

For this new moon we have a five card spread focused on tangible goals and how we can accomplish them practically. While shuffling, focus on the goal you’re wanting more guidance on. If you have multiple goals you may want to do a spread for each.
Card 1: What mental/emotional state would be advantageous towards accomplishing my goal?
Card 2: What practical details have I overlooked?
Card 3: What outside support or resources would benefit me while working towards my goal?
Card 4: How can I attract this support?
Card 5: How can I best support myself to achieve my goal?

Ritual for the Capricorn Super New Moon
This week we’re providing a practical, secular and a magical ritual!
Stock up on office supplies because this is an excellent time for planning and following through on those plans. Moon Goals: Let’s start with a daily ritual using any sort of journal/calendar you prefer. Decide how many goals you’d like to set, and how much time you will likely need to accomplish them. We suggest starting with a short term goal (maybe till the upcoming full moon) and a long term goal (like six months from now for the Capricorn full moon).
Mark the dates of your moon cycle for the goals.
For your short term goal fill in one thing you will do each day to reach that goal. For your long term goal write out one thing you will do per month to reach that goal.
For the next few days/weeks until your short term goal check off every day you accomplish what you set out to do. If you weren’t able to accomplish your daily goal, that’s okay. Just move it to another day or skip it if you can still make your goal without it. Do the same for each month of your long term goal. Make sure to pick a date every month to check in with your self on your progress.
This is basically just a way of keeping yourself accountable and planning, but on a moon cycle schedule.
Sigil Work: Since this time is about setting intentions and manifesting, why not try some sigil magic? If you’ve never tried it we give you a quick rundown below. Just a head’s up, this is a powerful form of magic so be careful with your wording. Do not be manipulative (e.g. don’t try to affect another person’s behavior) or greedy (e.g. don’t ask for the power to destroy your enemy), and so on.
First, figure out your goal and write it out as a sentence. Make sure the sentence is written as though the goal has already been accomplished. For example, say you want to write a book and you’re setting a goal to have a first draft done this year. Write out, “I have written the first draft of my book” instead of “I will write the first draft of my book by end of year.” Keep your sentences fairly short and to the point if you can.
Once you have your sentence cross out all repeating letters, so the above sentence would look like:
I H A V E W R T N F S D O M Y B K
Then, cross out all vowels (A, E, I, O, U, sometimes Y- We cross out 'Y' if it acts as a vowel, like at the end of a word) so you end up with:
H V W R T N F S D M B K
Quite a lot of letters left, although many sentences will have fewer. Once you have these arrange them into some sort of image. You can break up the letters, flip them, turn them upside down … Whatever you like! The one below is my example, but your image can be as stylized and complex, or simple as you want.
Once you have an image you like, you can use it anywhere you’ll see it regularly. You can put it on a post it note and stick it to a mirror, write it out in a journal or wherever you take notes, or even write it on your body. Some practitioners like to have the image be so ubiquitous they forget the original sentence or even meaning. When this happens, it means the sigil has worked its way into your subconscious and is ready to be released. However, this takes a very long time, so you can always release it even if you still remember what the sigil represents.
After a substantial amount of time- I usually keep sigils for several months- the image should be very familiar to you and you might be ready to release it. At this stage you are activating it, i.e. allowing the magic to take hold. You can do this either through an altered state of consciousness (meditation, sex, etc.) or by physically destroying the sigil (burning, burying, etc.). My favorite way of releasing a sigil is through the simple act of burning a paper image of it. Once released/activated, I make sure to get rid of any other physical versions of the sigil. However, some people like to reuse the sigils, so they keep a copy around.
